The Propos[a]l

Looking forward and seeing where my project will go.

Intention

How do we utilise film techquines to reshape live theatre for the digital landscape?

The intention is how to experience live theatre through digital platforms such as ‘Zoom’ when we are currently social distancing and also for this to continue exist as restrictions ease.

Context

Currently majority of theatre companies (locally and internationally) are posting already existing  pre-recorded performances online and doing live play readings through ‘Zoom’ in order to maintain audiences engagement, but there is an opportunity now to develop how theses experiences further through ‘Zoom’ or other online platforms, by exploring how the narrative could be heighten through the frame of the camera and addressing what does it mean to experience theatre through the [virtual] stage?

Here in Australia theatre companies will be returning to stage during the next couple of months but not at full capacity therefore being able to redesign the theatre experience for a virtual stage will create a new encounter for how theatre is experienced but allow for a lager audience engagement.

Site.

Continue to explore how Romeo and Juliet can be performed on ‘Zoom’. With the focus on the balcony scene and how that can still continue to heighten through the frame and potentially into another key scene within the play. Before semester two commences look into having a physical site, wanting to start explore recordings and how heighten on a physical stage. Researching into some theatre venues.

Audience

Theatre community.

Audiences who don’t normally have access to theatre.

Doing zoom through facebook or youtube live both local and international audiences will be able to watch together.

Gathering information conducting some interviews with a diverse range of theatre companies in order understand what will the experience going theatre moving forward and will shows be broadcasting online to maintain social distancing. Engaging with people in the theatre industry and having conversations about future of theatre.

I may need to use actors to continue to explore the relationship between actor and camera and how that will be played out specially throughout the scene.

Sourcing where to rent camera equipment.

Design Approach

Continuing to look at film as a primary technology but also starting to look at the role of set design in relation to film. Investigating how cameras could be incorporated into the set for more closer views.

Examining some significants moments within the play and breaking those moments and configuring different camera arrangements within the set to enhance

Final Presentation

Looking forward, there is potential to do a live performance through zoom, streamed through either facebook or youtube, but only be doing a couple of scenes from the play.

Accompanied by a scale model and diagrams of the set as tool to show where the cameras are located in space.
